The ground

AFL is played on an oval shaped ground, which is often used for cricket during summer. A ground must be grassed, have a minimum length of 135 metres and a minimum width of 110 metres.

GROUND POSITIONS

There are 18 players on the ground for each team. 6 in the forward area, 6 in the middle and 6 in the back area, however once play has commenced players can move throughout the field.

THERE IS NO OFFSIDE

Unlike most other football codes, opposing players begin the game at the same position but are the reverse, ie. A full forward will be standing with the opposition full back, thus players from each side will be in positions throughout the field.

GOAL ENDS

The direction of play is alternated at the beginning of each quarter; each team will have their goals at either end of the ground for half of the game.
